“DEFEAT Of The WOLF PACKS.” By Geoffrey Jones. This book describes vividly the loss of the cream of the Nazi U-boat fleet during the winter of 1943-1944. The season started with large German wolf-packs, hunting with their newly perfected acoustic homing torpedoes. They held the North Atlantic lifeline in a death grip. But, gradually their stranglehold on allied shipping was broken as American and British codebreakers read the German naval signals and diverted the convoys around the waiting hunters. Many U-boats returned to port with their torpedoes unfired. Early in 1944, the Germans tried reducing the size of the wolf packs. Groups of three, and then later even single submarines, were given the task of locating and attacking Atlantic convoys. Nazi efforts proved to be in vain as the hunters became the hunted. Increasing sophistication and experience of American, British and Canadian antisubmarine forces seized the initiative from the Germans. Aerial patrols by U.S. Army and Navy aircraft became increasingly effective while improved radar served to deny the U-boats the sanctuary of the night. Providing the reader a well balanced view, this book traces the buildup and successes of the wolf packs as their eventual break up and defeat. It contains many fascinating stories never before published in English, many of which would be considered too outlandish to be used by novelists. Yet all the stories are true. 1987 first edition Hardback book, with dust jacket. Jacket is wrapped in protective clear plastic. 223 pages, 35 black and white photos, maps, glossary and index.
